Day-to-day tour itinerary

Day 1

Marrakech

Meet & greet at MARRAKECH airport and transfer to your premier category riad - a guesthouse converted from a traditional Moorish-designed family home centred around a small courtyard patio or inner garden. In order to capture the essence of medieval Marrakech, you will stay inside the old walled city medina. Depending on your arrival time you will then have the rest of the day to explore the vibrant city of Marrakech unguided or just enjoy the facilities at the riad such as a splash pool, roof terrace, board games and books. The old medina of Marrakech is a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys, with different neighbourhoods and streets specialising in various arts, crafts and produce. Take time to relax in your traditional guesthouse, enjoy the roof terrace and soak up the sounds and smells of Morocco’s favourite city. Dinner will be served at your riad/hotel this evening.

Stay: Traditional 4-star riad or luxury hotel in Marrakech

Meal plan: Dinner

Day 2

Marrakech

Half day morning walking tour with city guide of Marrakech - also known as the ‘red city’ for its famous pink-hued ramparts. Our English-speaking city guide will meet you at your riad in the morning and take you through the souks of the medieval medina, introducing you to artisans, bakers, carpenters, spice- merchants, apothecaries and also including visiting the landmark monuments of Ben Youssef Medersa, the Bahia Palace and the Koutoubia Mosque. You can test out your haggling skills if you choose to purchase from the many vendors in the souk. Your tour ends at the famous Place Jemaa el Fna square where you can enjoy lunch from a roof terrace overlooking the bizarre activities of the acrobats, storytellers, musicians and snake charmers. Rest of the day is at leisure or we suggest you take a horse-drawn carriage around the ramparts or to the new town are of Gueliz to visit the exquisite Majorelle Gardens, owned by Yves St. Laurent and originally private home of the painter Jacques Majorelle. We suggest you return to the square for an evening dinner at one of the outdoor food grills to sample anything from grilled meats, fried fish, fried aubergines, boiled snails, harira soup, spiced ginger tea, boiled sheep’s head and other local delicacies. Even if you decide to eat elsewhere, the experience of the Place Jemaa el Fna at night is an intoxicating one - with smoke swirling up from the grills, the pounding rhythms of the street musicians, the call to prayer ringing out from the mosques as the excited crowds gather for this nightly ‘circus’.

Stay: Traditional 4-star riad or luxury hotel in Marrakech

Day 3

Marrakech - foothills of High Atlas Mountains

Morning departure from Marrakech to leave the city behind and travel for about an hour into the foothills of the Atlas Mountains to enjoy a choice of countryside retreats set against the backdrop of the High Atlas Mountains. Depending on choice of accommodation you will either stay near Amizmiz in a small luxury hotel with acres of grounds, pools, cinema and spa. During the afternoon in Amizmiz you can take a guided hike through the countryside. Or if you prefer, you can stay just outside Marrakech in a stunning boutique hotel with its own on-site cultural activities and workshops designed to involve children and teenagers in anything from milking goats, to making natural cosmetics or even learning to be a DJ. For those who want to go mule trekking, then we will recommend a stay in boutique hotel in the Ouirgane Valley with lovely pool, contemporary decor and large organic kitchen gardens. The decision is yours.

Stay: Small luxury hotel Amizmiz, Ouirgane or Marrakech outskirts

Meal plan: Breakfast & dinner

Day 4

Countryside activities

We can offer you a choice of activities outside of your chosen luxury hotel today. For those wanting a bit of adrenalin rush, we have planned a trip to the outdoor adventure centre Terres d’Amanar, near Tahanaout (30 mins drive) where you can go climbing, zip-lining, horse riding or even have a go at archery. Alternatively you could enjoy an excursion to Lake Lalla Takerkoust reservoir for a leisurely lunch and, conditions permitting, have a go at jet-skiing or horse riding through the forests.

Day 5

Agafay Desert

Today you relax at your hotel until check-out at noon. We propose that you stay to enjoy lunch at the hotel and then prepare for an overnight desert adventure in the rocky desert plains of Agafay. For those with no time to travel south to the real Sahara desert, then this is the next best thing and is strikingly beautiful in its variety of colours and vegetation, even though it is a plateau undergoing desertification. After lunch, your driver will come to collect you and drive for about an hour to reach a small Berber village where you will stop to have tea with a local family. From here you will mount onto camels and trek for about an hour and a half to reach your luxurious overnight encampment. You can also choose to stay in an exclusive retreat, tucked into a small oasis here where accommodation is not in tents, but in spacious and impeccable decorated cabins. In both cases you have free time to wander in the desert, play cards or board games before enjoying a delicious dinner served under the stars under a Berber tent.

Stay: Deluxe camp or retreat in Agafay desert

It’s only a short drive back to Marrakech and this time you will enjoy the splendid ‘Beverley Hills’ of Marrakech - the oasis that surrounds the city is know as the Palmeraie. You will reach your boutique hotel in the palmeraie at around lunchtime and from here it is about total pampering and relaxation. Tennis courts, swimming pools, croquet lawns, organic gardens, spa treatments and great food and service all against a soundtrack of birdsong in what can only be described as a little piece of paradise.
