Tour summary

A 9-day combined activity and touring holiday to the High Atlas Mountains and Todra Gorge in Morocco’s great Southern Valleys and Oases. Includes 3 full days of rock climbing for beginners and intermediates (with AMGA certified instructor). Time for exploring on foot, touring in 4x4, sightseeing in Marrakech and relaxing. This easy-paced tour also takes in UNESCO World Heritage site of Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, as well as visiting the splendid kasbahs and oases of Skoura Valley and Ouarzazate. Includes a full day introductory training in the High Atlas Mountains. All equipment supplied. Accommodation in traditional riad and boutique guesthouses. Plenty of options for add-on adventure activities. Ideal for beginners, families with teenagers and groups of friends.

Day-to-day tour itinerary

Day 1

Marrakech

Arrive Marrakech airport and private transfer to your riad in the old medina. You have the rest of the day free to explore the city depending on arrival time. The old medina of Marrakech is a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys, with different neighbourhoods and streets specialising in various arts, crafts and produce. Take time to relax in your traditional riad guesthouse, enjoy the roof terrace and soak up the sounds and smells of Morocco’s favourite city. Dinner will be served at your riad/hotel this evening.

Day 2

Marrakech - Imlil/Toubkal National Park

This morning you meet your dedicated English-speaking AMGA certified rock climbing instructor/guide and pick-up in your private 4x4. Head to the Oukaimeden* ski resort in High Atlas Mountains (approx 1 hour from Marrakech) for introductory rock climbing tuition, safety instruction and learning to use the equipment, individual assessment, confidence building. Picnic lunch supplied. At the end of the afternoon you return to Marrakech. You are free to make your own plans for dinner this evening, but we suggest you head out to the main Place Jemaa el Fna to experience the world biggest outdoor BBQ offering an array of grilled meat skewers, sheep’s head, boiled snails, fried fish, Moroccan soup, salads, dates, orange juice, spiced ginger tea and sweets. Its thrilling nightly ‘circus’ of musicians, acrobats, snake charmers, storytellers and rogues.

Day 3

Marrakech - High Atlas Mountains - Ait Benhaddou - Skoura

Today you head off in private 4x4 with your local Moroccan guide and into the High Atlas Mountains. Crossing via the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass you will have time to stop along the way to admire the stunning scenery of rocky peaks, waterfalls, deep ravines, fertile valleys and Berber villages. After a 4 hrs’ drive you will reach the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kasbah Ait Benhaddou. Time for walking visit to this fortified hilltop kasbah and lunch nearby. After lunch continue east and reach the Skoura oasis. In Skoura you will visit the 17th century Kasbah Amerhidil in amongst the oasis of date palms, figs, quince, pomegranate and olive trees. The Skoura palm oasis was planted in the 12th century by Sultan Moulay Yacoub el Mansour and was named after the indigenous Berber Haskourene tribe that lived here. You will also visit the fascinating Museum of Skoura which houses exhibits of regional traditional costumes, manuscripts and local agricultural implements. A collection of antique photographs shows the old kasbahs of the region with explanations of their significance and architecture. Time to relax, explore the Skoura oasis or swim in the hotel pool. NB You may wish to add an extra day to your holiday here to enjoy horse-riding or hiking through this gorgeous oasis.

Day 4

Skoura - Dadès Valley - Todra Gorge

Morning departure in 4x4 for about 2-3 hrs’ drive via Kelaa M’Gouna in the Valley of Roses, passing through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to reach the town of Tinerhir. Then you head up into the ‘neck’ of the Todra Gorge to reach our guesthouse perched on the edge of the Todra River, with the steep limestone cliffs of the gorge towering above. You have lunch here and then meet up again with your English-speaking guide/instructors to tackle the graded climbs in the region (climbs for all levels of experience). Afternoon approx 3 hrs of instructed climbing and visiting the steep rock face that towers above Morocco’s highest oasis. The scenery here is spectacular with the russet surface of the rocks glowing in the afternoon/evening sunlight, palm trees, figs and blooming oleander bushes lining the river bed. At the end of the day you return to your guesthouse for dinner.

Day 5

Todra Gorge Rock Climbing Day

Full day of instructed climbing in the Todra Gorge. You will have local Berber mountain guide with mule to carry climbing equipment, backpacks, picnic lunch & water. Your 4x4 and driver are at disposal for anybody wishing to return to the guesthouse early, or preferring to spend the afternoon trekking on foot in the region. Evening return to guesthouse in Todra for dinner.

Day 6

Todra Gorge - Ouarzazate

Morning 2-3 hrs’ guided climbing (You can choose to have a full extra day of climbing if you wish). Participants can also opt to spend the morning relaxing or hiking if they prefer. Lunch at the guesthouse before heading back west along the Dadès Valley to reach Ouarzazate (4-5 hrs’ drive). Time to say goodbye to your climbing instructor. On the return journey we will head off-road via the twisting Dadès Gorge to meet nomadic Berber families who live in rocky caves along the Southern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains. By early evening you reach the town of Ouarzazate and time to relax by the hotel pool before dinner. NB You can extend the itinerary here by one extra night to travel east this afternoon to the Sahara desert dunes of Erg Chebbi with overnight camping in nomad bivouac and 2 hrs’ camel trek. You then pick-up the itinerary a day later at Ouarzazate.

Day 7

Ouarzazate - Kasbah Taourirt - Marrakech

Morning time free to explore local restored Kasbah Taourirt on foot or relax and enjoy some pool time. Approx 11.00 a.m. head off in 4x4 for the return trip to Marrakech, stopping for lunch en route at the highest point of the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass. You reach Marrakech by evening time approx 5 p.m. The evening is free for you to visit Place Jemaa el Fna and grab some dinner in the square, a local restaurant or we can book dinner at your riad for you if you prefer.

Day 8

Marrakech - free day

Day at leisure in Marrakech for exploring this fascinating and exotic city. Wander the souks, the labyrinthine medina, visit Sultans palaces and the magical main square of Place Jemaa el Fna, with its snake-charmers, musicians, storytellers, hawkers, side-stalls and nightly sizzling food grills. We can provide an official city guide for half or full-day tour of key monuments, palaces and sights if you wish. N.B. You may also wish to avail of other activities this day such as cookery class, quad-biking, camel-riding, hot-air balloon ride, horse-riding, hammam/massage etc. See Suggested Add-on Activities below

Marrakech

Private transfer to the airport from your riad as required. Alternatively, you can choose to continue your holiday in Morocco with us by adding on one of our Suggested Morocco Adventure Tour Itineraries.
