Tour summary
A 5-day eco-friendly desert adventure trek for those wanting to experience the rugged beauty of the Sahara in the same way as the caravans of a bygone age. Far off the beaten path, with no motorised vehicles allowed in the region, the Screaming Dunes of Erg Zahar get their name from the eerie sound of the wind as it whips across the top of the dunes. With your own camel and local guide, you’ll experience the wilderness of the Sahara at the gentle pace of the dromedary and set up camp under the African stars. Your trekking guide will lead you gently across the different terrains, gentle dunes, harsh dry plains, shaded oasis and through the surprising pastures that bloom after rainfall. Ideal for students, groups; adventurous adult travellers. Medium level of fitness required. Transport to M’Hamid and accommodation pre- and post trek can be arranged.

Day-to-day tour itinerary
Day 1
M'Hamid - Desert Camp
Morning depart from M’Hamid village with nomad guide and camels packed with food and equipment for the trek. You will have picnic lunch in shade of a nearby oasis and sleep near the marabout site of Holy Man Sidi Naji. Camping is in 2-man tent or under the stars. Dinner cooked on open fire by your guide.
Stay: Wild camping - 2-man igloo tent or under the stars
Meal plan: Lunch and Dinner
Day 2
Desert Camp - Screaming Dunes Erg Zahar Desert Camp
Depart in the morning and continue for 3 hours toward the Screaming Dunes. After lunch continue to Screaming Dunes Zahar. Camping is in 2-man tent or camp sauvage. Meals cooked on open fire by your guide.
Stay: Wild camping - 2-man igloo tent or under the stars
Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 3
Desert Camp - Erg Smar
Cross the Draa River on back of camel for 2 hours. Lunch in small sand dunes of Erg Smar and shade of tamarisk trees. 3 hours’ trek after lunch across flat hamada to dunes of Bougarn. Camping is in 2-man tent or camp sauvage. Meals cooked on open fire by your guide.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 4
Desert Camp - Oued Naam desert camp
3 hours of trekking before lunch in Krayaat Jemal - the crossroads of the caravan. 3 hours more trekking and spend night near the well in Oued Naam, the dry river bed. Camping is in 2-man tent or camp sauvage. Meals prepared on open fire by your guide.
Stay: Wild camping - 2-man igloo tent or under the stars
Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 5
Desert Camp - M'Hamid el Ghizlane
3 hours of trekking after breakfast. Lunch in dunes of El Mezouari. Return to village of M’Hamid el Ghizlane after 3 more hours of trekking by late afternoon.

Meal plan: Breakfast and Lunch
- Your trip baggage and equipment is carried by pack-camels, you will also have your own camel for riding. Additional holiday baggage can be left securely at our base in M'Hamid until you return.
- We can arrange accommodation pre-and post trek in the village of M'Hamid. We can also arrange your onward transportation.
- Not suitable for anybody aged under 16 years
- The trip offers basic tent accommodation only and wild camping.
