The Draa River is the longest in Morocco at 1,100 km. It flows from the High Atlas Mountains and disappears in the sands of the Sahara. The Draa Valley is a magnificent and important oasis of palm trees, date farming and groves of fruit trees and agricultural produce. Kasbahs and settlements line the valley which was the main sub-Saharan caravan trade route for gold and spices. The Kasbah des Caids at Tamnougalte is a 16th century Kasbah on the ancient spice route to Marrakech and was once a thriving trade centre. Visit the museum with architectural remains, artifacts and utensils used by Berber, Arab, African and Jewish inhabitants. N.B. For those opting for the luxury lunch option, we will visit the museum at ksar Tissergate instead. We reach Zagora by lunchtime and you have a choice of your lunch venue and sty;e - in the gardens of a boutique riad in the nearby palm groves, at a luxury oasis boutique guest-house with swimming pool near Tissergate (7kms north of Zagora) or take a camel-ride into the desert dunes of nearby Erg Nakhil and enjoy a simple lunch at a typical Sahara desert camp. After lunch we travel for another 20 minutes south for a brief visit the Tamegroute pottery with its green-glazed ceramics and 13th century Zaouia with Koranic library open to non believers. We depart at around 3pm to return directly to Ouarzazate via the Draa Valley arriving at approx 6/7pm.
