Day tour itinerary

Day 1

Marrakech - Asni - Ouirgane - Marrakech

You depart in private 4x4 from your hotel in Marrakech at around 9.00 a.m. You head out into the foothills of the High Atlas for a magnificent active day excursion in the Ouirgane Valley. On Saturdays there is a lively local souk/market in the town of Asni (you will stop here for about half an hour on route if time permits). After about an hour’s drive, you meet your English-speaking trekking guide and muleteers in the village of Marigha. In this region salt is mined from huge wells of brine. The brine is left for the water to evaporate on salt pans before it is gathered and carried on donkeys to the neighboring villages to be sold. The day trek starts from here and passes through Toubkal National Park through a landscape of wild flowers with panoramic views of the entire valley. Along the way you may encounter the indigenous horned Barbary sheep before reaching woodland and a glimpse of the highest mountain in North Africa - Jbel Toubkal - glistening in the distance. Following the river valley then passes across hillsides with open forest and through isolated Berber hamlets towards the village of Torord. In this village you will see the ancient stone oil presses that still use the traditional grinding mill powered by donkeys or mules. The trek continues through olive groves to the formerly Jewish village of Anraz; here you will be served a traditional Berber meal by a local family. After lunch we set off towards the south along mule tracks we trek alongside scattered fields of maize, seasonal wild flowers, olive trees. You return to the vehicle/driver and reaching your hotel in Marrakech after an exhilarating day tour and mountain trek into the High Atlas Mountains.
